Aroostook NWR

Upland Sandpiper
Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge is being developed on land left over from redevelopment of the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone. Over 13 miles of trail wind through the refuge, traversing mixed habit and skirting several marshes. Grasslands support upland sandpipers and savannah sparrows. Boggy areas support spruce forest, which can be good for sought-after boreal warblers, such as Cape May, bay-breasted, and Tennessee. Boreal chickadees and Canada jays are encountered sporadically. Pick up a map at the visitor center.

Directions: Aroostook NWR is near the entrance to the Loring Commerce Center, reached from Route 89 between Caribou and Limestone. Enter on Loring Commerce Road and at 1.3 miles bear right toward the visitor center.
