This tour is offered through the Penobscot Lake Lodge. It is the only building complex on this lake, just a mile from the Quebec border. The Lodge prides itself on its comfort, amenities, and cuisine. For birders, the habitat is terrific. We’ll explore at a leisurely pace the miles of trails lying outside your cabin door, enjoying the warblers, Winter Wrens, Swainson’s Thrushes, Ruffed Grouse, and other denizens of the northern forest. Expect Blackpolls, Bay-breasted Warblers, Boreal Chickadees, and Lincoln's Sparrows. Now confirmed for June 27-29, 2008.

The tour features a variety of birding experiences. We’ll motor around a good part of the lake, looking for Common Terns, Bonaparte's Gulls, waterfowl, and raptors. Short excursions by van to local hotspots often yields many boreal bird specialties such as Northern Goshawk, White-winged Crossbill, and Evening Grosbeak. This is moose country. We’ll finish each evening with a feast and an enjoyable presentation on building birding skills.

The 3-night package includes accommodations, all meals, amenities, 2 days of guided birding and 1 day of unguided relaxation and personal exploration by trail or kayak. Rate is $549 per person (tax & tip not included). For more information about the lodge and to reserve the tour, contact: info@penobscotlakelodge.com or call 207-695-3244.

For information about the itinerary, target species, or conditions, contact Bob Duchesne at duchesne@midmaine.com or 207-827-3782. Expect hikes of up to two miles on ground that is level but occasionally uneven and damp. Water resistant footwear is recommended. Mosquitoes are common; good clothing and repellant are advised. Binoculars are a necessity. Spotting scopes are handy but are not likely to be used often on this tour. The guide will bring a scope and guidebooks.  The tour begins at the lodge and participants should plan to drive to the boat landing or schedule floatplane transportation. (Incidentally, the Penobscot Lake Lodge is one of only two wilderness camps left in Maine that can not be reached by land.) For a travelogue of the 2007 tour, click here.
