Farms is one of the prime stops on the Maine Birding Trail. The farm
once served as the main hub of Great Northern's lumber operation in the
West Branch area. It is now a 4-season, rustic, sporting resort with

The Oak Lodge
is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a part of the
Kineo Cottage Row Historic District. The original building was
built in 1886. The current Oak Lodge was built in its place in
1912. Mt. Kineo rises dramatically above Moosehead Lake. Historic
lodgings and Maine's second oldest golf course are nestled in its
shadow. Kineo is surrounded by water and is only reached by hourly
ferry, assuring welcome solitude. |

Spencer Pond Camps are the only cabins on the lake. The nearest neighbor
is 14 miles away. The first cabin was built over a century ago by a
Maine Guide. All six lakeside cabins offer spectacular views of Little
Spencer Mountain. Wood stoves provide warmth and a cozy atmosphere.
Homemade quilts and rocking chairs add the feeling of comfort and the
image of yesteryear when life happened at a slower pace. The owners are
excellent birders and can direct you toward boreal specialties on
private lands. |

abutting First Roach Pond, a pristine lake nearly eight miles long. The

Gray Ghost Camps, originally simple cabins
built in 1950 for fishermen (and named after the locally famous fishing
fly), have been improved over the years to offer a comfortable stay and
the best of four-season activities. Cabins are directly on the shore of
Moose River in Rockwood, mid-way up the west side of Moosehead.
Convenient to west-side trails, the North Maine Woods, Lake Brassau, and
the route to Bingham-Jackman. |

Medawisla is the Indian name for the
Common Loon and, indeed, they are unavoidable here. So are the moose,
which often come to drink from the river outside the cabins. In fact,
these rustic cabins are on water so deep in the Maine woods that you may
not have to leave the porch to add birds to your life list. There are 7
pine paneled cabins with shower, hot and cold running water, equipped
for two to ten people and arranged for families, couples or individuals. |
