Nests: Maine Lakes & Mountains
►
Ware Street Inn - Lewiston.
Lewiston/Auburn is Maine's second-largest metropolitan area. So
it can be a little daunting to find just the right accommodations
that are close to the center of town, close to business, and also
close to great birding. Problem solved! This astounding inn isn't
just close to Bates College, Central Maine Medical Center, St. Mary's
Medical Center, and most of the commercial district; it's also within
a mile of Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary - site #52 on the Maine Birding
Trail. Sure the grounds are extraordinary and the amenities are
fabulous. That's just a bonus.
►
Crocker Pond House - Bethel.
Architect Stuart Crocker designed and built the perfect inn for
himself and his wife, Ellen. It's a little slice of heaven tucked
away in mature forest just off the beaten track. Windows extend
outward, making each room feel a part of the outdoors. The inn features
trails through 50 acres of hardwood forest. There's a warbler in
each tree and a thrush behind every bush. The inn is near the White
Mountain National Forest, Grafton Notch State Park, and the Mahoosuc
Mountain Range - a nice staging are for a daytrip to chase boreal
and alpine species, including the elusive Bicknell's Thrush.
