town of Milford just above Bangor. It sits on the banks of the Penobscot
River across from where the world famous Old Town Canoes are made.
Bald Eagles and waterfowl are commonplace sightings out the back
window. Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is right around
the corner and many of Maine's sought-after boreal species are nearby.
Spend the day birding locally or run up to Baxter State Park. Birders
on a budget will love the full kitchen suites.
►
Brewster Inn - Dexter.
Put yourself in the geographic heart of the state. Surround yourself
with history. This is the former mansion home of Maine governor
and senator, Owen Brewster, and it is on the National Register of
Historic Places. Your English hosts, Mark & Judith Stephens, add
an additional spice of culture and elegance. From here, you can
run up the road to the Moosehead Lake area for boreal birding and
adventure, or you can run into the Bangor area, or run over to the
coast. Or don't run anywhere. Just relax in a small New England
town in the center of the Maine Highlands.

►
Evergreen Lodge - Shirley.
This delightful lodge is located in moose country right at the gateway
to Greenville and the Moosehead Lake area. From here, it is easy
to venture up either side of the lake, or even into the very productive
woodlands and bogs south of Moosehead. Don't be surprised to hear
Boreal Chickadees in the parking lot. The log cabin design, the
comfortable bedrooms, the spacious common areas, and the excellent
breakfast make this inn a birder favorite.

►The
Big Moose Inn - Millinocket.
Located lakeside, adjacent to The Golden Road, near the entrance
to Baxter State Park, this complex is headquarters for birding,

►New
England Outdoor Center - Millinocket.
NEOC is often held up as the model for how ecotourism should be
done in Maine. A variety of accommodations and outdoor adventures

to birding Baxter State Park or the working forest west of the park.
Discerning guests will appreciate how carefully the owners have
worked to fit the accommodations and amenities harmoniously into
the environment.
►Historic
Pittston Farm - Seboomook.
Historic Pittston Farm is located
above Moosehead Lake, in the heart of the working forest. Be aware:

all the incredible scenery and wildlife, this is it. And the inn
can even provide a localized birding guidebook to help you
