Research for the
Maine Birding Trail began in 2003, spanning well over
300 locations across the state. Five years and 36,000 miles
later, the trail has launched with the designation of 82
official sites - sites that feature excellent birding, but also
excellent parking, paths, facilities, etc. The brochure contains
short descriptions and regional maps. To download a free copy of
the brochure, click here.
The companion
Maine Birding Trail Official Guide
details over 260 sites, many of them off the beaten track and
away from crowds. The guide features over 100 new maps, secrets
for finding sought-after species, and advice on trip-planning.
It includes bonus chapters on two nearby Canadian islands:
Campobello and Grand Manan. As new public lands and private
trusts have become available to birders over the last decade,
this guide brings site descriptions of Maine birding into the
21st century.
The
Maine Birding Trail Official Guide
is now available online from
Down East Books.
It is also available from most local Maine bookstores and at all
Maine Audubon centers including Gilsland Farm in Falmouth and
Fields Pond in Holden.
