In all of Washington County, there is not one chain hotel. This is the
land of "Mom & Pop" motels, inns, lodges, B&Bs, sporting camps, and
cottages. Expect the pride of excellent service because in most cases,
you'll be dealing directly with the owner. During the era of sailing
vessels, this was one of the most strategically important places in
America. Abundant tall pines made excellent masts for His Majesty's ships.
Later, the coastal forests contributed timbers to the finest vessels of
the U.S. Navy and the schooners of Maine's "windjammer" fleet. As a
result, there are many mansions originally built by prosperous sea
captains along the downeast coast and some of them are now elegant inns.
Choose your location wisely. It's a two-hour drive from the Washington County line to Eastport and Lubec, and another couple hours to extend the Route 1 adventure into the incredible lakes area above Princeton. Select accommodations around the southern end of Route 1 if you plan to spend some time in Acadia National Park. The area around Machias is centrally located for most of the coastal destinations in Washington County. It also offers great shopping and a variety of restaurants. The two puffin boats to Machias Seal Island go out of Jonesport and Cutler respectively. Further downeast, Lubec is close to Quoddy Head and Campobello, while Eastport boasts a good choice of sea captain mansions as B&Bs and it is where the Sylvina W. Beal windjammer docks. Calais is the gateway to Atlantic Canada and offers several fine motels. It is ideally located for explorations of Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge. Princeton and Grand Lake Stream border on exceptional lakes and the St. Croix River. |
